Forty-plus years in journalism and the wire service business. Original cast member of Bloomberg News bureau in Washington, D.C., starting in November 1990. A pioneer. Helped establish Bloomberg’s coverage of economics, U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve. Our rodeo days, like riding bucking broncos through hallowed halls of nation’s capital. “Quick! Where’s the coin phone? Greenspan just made news!”
Added Bloomberg Radio to portfolio in 1993. Transferred to Bloomberg News bureau in Denver in 2012, covering markets and economic data for wire and radio network. Also covered Aurora theater shooting in July 2012 and the coronavirus outbreak in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana in 2020.
Started journalism career as UPI stringer in Ohio in 1977 at age 19. My “cub” days. Worked summer gig at UPI in Kentucky in 1980. Joined UPI in Washington, D.C. in 1982 as full-time local news and police/fire beat reporter on Mid-Atlantic Desk – AKA “MAD Desk.” Clear the relays! Promoted to UPI national desk, space shuttle and science beat – and finally economics. A great post-graduate education. Loved those teletype bells and scooping the AP. Hung on for dear life during UPI’s stint in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and 10% pay cut.
In 1978, I placed a tiny slip of paper – a prayer request – into a crack of the Western Wall in Jerusalem asking for the gift of enthusiasm. It’s paid off more than I ever imagined. For most of my career I’ve been “tap dancing to work” to quote Warren Buffett – and having fun.
